Hello!
First and foremost... I am new to this forum, So bare with me if I am doing something wrong, haha!
I Currently do not own a jeep, but I am in the process of purchasing one. As the title states, I have the decision to make between a Willy's Wheeler or a Black bear edition...
My question for all you experts; Which one would you recommend me and why?
Should I even bother getting one of these, or should I go with a sahara or something? I have been looking at a rubicon but I kind of want to do my own modifications to the jeep.
Thanks in advance!

All editions have their Pros and Cons. Just go to the Website and look at the differences and pick what fits you best. Its gonna end up being things like not being able to get heated seats on the Willy's or no Premium Sound on the Big Bear that make the final decision. Also money, money is a big thing.
Here is the link to the Jeep compare models page:

All Special Editions are different, mainly each are options Jeep puts together to make them attractive to the buyer, all this being said, pick the model or edition that suits your needs and wants. The Willys edition has been around for 3-4 years, probably because of its popularly with options that many want, others come and go and produced in short time periods, 4-6 months and then there gone. The Sahara model offers many options included in the base price, but none of them geared to the off road capabilities needed for off roading. Thus you will need to spend a lot of dollars in options to make if close to what you get in the Willys as standard equipment. It all boils down to, you have to pick the model and options that you want in a Jeep and how you will use it. Just remember this, Jeep upgrades are expensive, I always tell buyers to get as much as you can afford from the factory, it will cost you a lot less in the long run.

The Black Bear has been out of production since April.
You will only be able to buy 2017 leftovers on the Dealer lot.
The Willys is your only choice for a new 2018 model.
That said, if you can find a BB with the options you like, it will be the better buy.
The BB was the Wrangler's value package. Order a Sport S with the same options and it will be about $1500-2000 more.

I recommend Willy Wheeler because of the 3.73 gears and trac lock.

Definitely do your homework on the editions. I went in for a Sport S and came out with a Big Bear. I couldn't find a Sport S at the dealer with 3.73 and LSD. The dealer found the Big Bear was in transit scheduled to be at the dealers in a couple days. It had everything I wanted and was $500 cheaper to boot. The real price difference is actually more because it came with BFG KO2 tires where the Sport comes with street tires. Plus it had a rock rail, tail light cage and I love the blacked out wheels.
So as I stated, and others here, look at the differences and determine which one suits you best.

I'm the exact same story. I wasn't seeking out a Big Bear, but I ended up with a nicer Jeep for less. The Big Bear package is highly underrated.

Keep in mind, how involved are you going to get? I bought a Willys and after what I have done to it, it was a waste of money. If you are going to be going to 35s and do anything more the DD and mall crawling, a regear will probably be in your future. The LSD is a must as a minimum IMO. The LSD is nice, but they are a clutch pack system that is not maintenance free. TrueTracs are similar in function, but maintenance free.
To give you a heads up
35s, regear, f&r truetracs, wheels & programmer is a hair over $5k.
if you get a lsd, you can take off the truetracs and save about $1k.
If you are going to swap out the major stuff then it don't matter what you get.
Take a look around the Build section and the "what did you do to your JK" thread and see how some of us have emptied some pockets. Then sit down and get a plan.
BUT BE TRUTHFUL!!! I wasted about $2k if i would have just gotten 35s to start with.

Thank you everyone for your imput!
I am indeed looking into modding the jeep, that is for sure.
The one I am looking at right now is the Willy's wheeler with Manual Transmission. Everything is included with it, with some decent looking wheels. I took a couple of screenshots from the dealership, maybe some of you can tell me if it would even be worth it.
The price is 37k (CAD), only 11500 km on it, being a 2015.
Reason the person sold it is because they did not like driving standard so they switched to automatic.

Neither, get a Sport with 3.73 and build your own. Only thing I personally regret is stereo system upgrade, but I value little trunk I have and can upgrade later, plus soft top. Anyway, I've probably dropped 5-6k since buying and that's not buying stereo upgrade. Enjoy regardless, it's been fun!

However, I knew going in most of what I wanted and saved on front end on buy. I was also fortunate to have really large down payment, so I could afford to drop 5k out the door. Everyone is different, I personally wouldn't go into large debt just to have an off road Jeep, just me. Like anything else, newness will wear off but payment won't.

29.5K USD (37K CAD) is very close to new (2018) Dealer invoice here in the US.
No idea about Canada pricing, except that some options are cheaper than here and others not available.

Unless you can't qualify for new car financing, buying a used JK is typically not worth it these days. The market for used JKs is a red hot seller's game.

Don't ask us then, this is the internet, you are going to get morons like me responding and can get all kinds of opinions.
If you think it is good, have done the research, and you can afford the price, buy it.

Same here. went looking to replace my 99 with a JKU so the family could all ride in it. Stumbled onto the big bear and couldn't pass up the options for the price.

If you aren't planning on a crazy build, the willys is an awesome package extremely capable with a great OEM look in my opinion.
The willys package got me interested in jeeps over three years ago, back then it was hard to see them on the road and the thought was that the willys edition was going to be a 1-2 year edition but now it's going strong into its fifth year of production.

That price is what list was on a 2017 with all power, window, door locks, transmission, etc. when I purchased my new Willys two months ago. Actually ($37.680) and could get 5% off of list price. The Willys I think is the best bang for the buck and your thinking is correct on the Willys Edition. As far as price it's way off as far as what they want for it, plus I've never seen a $49,000 Willys, at least not stock from the factory. I also thought that I've seen bad things about that dealer posted on this website, I could be wrong, is that dealer in Oklahoma.

Even though I'm in the same boat (new suspension, wheels, tires, t-case, G2 D44 up front, G2 Chromoly axles out back, diffs, lockers, etc.) I wouldn't say that (in my case, at least) it was a waste of money. Here's why.
I was new to the more extreme aspects of the off-roading sport, so I didn't know how I'd eventually wind up. I wanted to be able to start off-roading and have good equipment (tires and gearing) to allow me to grow in the sport until I learned what I was doing, at which point I could make fairly intelligent decisions about what I needed in my build. Had I started with lesser tires and gearing I'd have likely felt compelled to make expensive upgrades sooner, and those may have not been the upgrades that proved to be the best for me in the longer run.
So I'm glad I started with the Willys, even though about the only remaining artifacts of the package are the tinted windows, the thing that lets you see transmission temp, etc. on the IP, and of course the wonderful stickers!

My '16 Willys JKU is a manual, with hard-top, Bluetooth (Connectivity), info center (EVIC?). Mine doesn't have power windows or door locks. I don't sweat that...
What do I wish it had? A D44 front and locking differentials at both ends, along with MOPAR or AEV bumpers and a 2.5 to 3.5 inch lift for 34 - 35 inch tires. Throw in 4.56 gears, too.
Manual transmissions (reminds me of my youth) are hard to find. It can be a pain in city traffic, but it's not my daily driver - although it will be in a few short months after I retire.
Kicker speakers were a pretty easy plug and play fix for the sound system, at least as much as I'm going to fix it.
As I see it, without electric sway bar disconnects, power windows and locks, e-lockers, and an automatic transmission, I'm ahead of the game reliability-wise. If I keep it stock and stay off of trails so rough they aren't trails and leave rock crawling to specialized rigs, I'm gonna be way, way ahead. Modest lift for 285/75r17 tires for stock rims is probably the only mod I will ever make.
The only thing that stopped me on a pretty harsh AZ trail was clearance. Got hung up and winched off.
The Willys does have the 3.73 gearing and a limited slip differential.
Wish I hadn't seen the Recon. Came perilously close to buying one Saturday.

Update!
I ended up going with the Willy's jeep as I negotiated a price that I could not say no for the condition it is... basically brand new.
see pictures attached.
2015, 10 000 km, not even a single scratch, both soft top and hard top included, 3.73 gear ratio and fully equiped.
Glad I can officially say I own a jeep! ?
